School: An active mind needs an active body
With fully 15% of school-aged children in Wisconsin now considered overweight, the long-term impact on our state is staggering. We must all do more to fight obesity where it starts - along with associated risks such as diabetes, heart disease and cancer.[Photo] - Kids in a huddle

Taking part in the Wisconsin Governor's Challenge can help reverse this trend - improving not just student health, but also academic performance and behavior.

What the Challenge is all about
Some of Wisconsin's best schools have used the Challenge to help students establish healthier, more active lifestyles. With the support of Governor Jim Doyle and the Wisconsin Sports Development Corporation, we're taking the Challenge to the next level.

Any school - big or small - can form a group to take the Challenge. With over 100 activities to choose from, it's a great way to make staying active fun for everybody. Students can jump rope, join a sports team or go for a bike ride. If you already have an activity program in place, the Challenge will complement your current efforts.

How do I get started?

It only takes a few moments to create a group for your school. After registration, you'll receive an email you can send out to build excitement and let everyone know the Group ID Number they should use to sign in. You can also update your group information at any time.

Get everyone involved
Make sure you're engaging as many teachers, parents and students as you can. Ask for feedback. Listen to their ideas. There are all kinds of ways to get the word out: meetings, emails, posters, you name it. The idea is to get people excited about the Challenge and keep them motivated.

Plan your activities
If you want your school to focus on specific activities - such as walking, basketball or soccer - you can select them using the group tool on the site. Then you're ready to go! We can also help you find ideas for getting active.

Reward success
Exactly how you motivate your school is up to you. You can award gift certificates, post the names of award winners online, or throw a party for everyone who completes the program.
